When WCPSS itself concluded material was outside the curriculum

In May 2022 the district reviewed rainbow-themed flash cards used in a Pre-K classroom and concluded they were not tied to the Pre-K curriculum without the principal’s approval.

Middle Creek Parental Rights · May 28, 2022 · updated August 24, 2026

WRAL reported in May 2022 that WCPSS reviewed rainbow-themed flash cards used in a Pre-K classroom at Ballentine Elementary in Fuquay-Varina. The district’s initial review determined the cards were not tied to its Pre-K curriculum, did not complement or extend it, and had been used without the principal’s review, knowledge, or approval.

Why this one carries more weight than the others

The conclusion is the district’s own. Every other item in this set is a critic’s characterisation of something; this is WCPSS reviewing material and finding it fell outside approved curriculum. That is a fact about the district’s own judgement, and it does not depend on anyone trusting us or trusting a partisan outlet.

What this does not mean

This happened in May 2022 — roughly fifteen months before the Parents’ Bill of Rights took effect in August 2023. It is not evidence about what is permitted today, and it should not be cited as though it were. It is evidence that a review process exists and has reached that conclusion before.

We are not naming the teacher involved. WCPSS did not release the name, and nothing this story is about requires it.

This is a summary of reporting by WRAL, not our own. Follow the link and read the original — and note that we have not independently verified its claims against primary documents.
