The White House promotes school choice — what is actually in it for a North Carolina parent

President Trump and Education Secretary Linda McMahon promoted the administration’s school choice agenda at a White House event, highlighting a tax credit that begins in 2027.

This concerns federal law or another state. It is useful context, but it does not bind a North Carolina district. For rights you can exercise here, see Know Your Rights.

Correction

An earlier version of this article quoted remarks attributed to the President about ideology in schools, sourced to a Fox News social media post. Those quotations appeared in neither Fox’s own article on the event nor the description of its footage, and we could not locate an official transcript. We said we would remove them if the wording could not be confirmed, so we have.

Fox News reported on 24 August 2026 that President Trump, speaking at a White House Rose Garden event alongside Education Secretary Linda McMahon, promoted the administration’s school choice agenda and said his administration is putting parents "back in charge" of where and how their children are educated.

Fox News footage of the 24 August Rose Garden event, 3 minutes 22 seconds. Hosted by Fox and played on their site.

The concrete part

Most of the event was argument. The specific measure highlighted was the Education Freedom Tax Credit, which according to the report will, beginning in 2027, offer taxpayers a credit of up to $1,700 for eligible donations to scholarship-granting organizations.

That is a checkable fact with a date attached, which makes it the part worth following. The mechanism matters too: it is a credit for donating to organisations that grant scholarships, not a direct payment to families.

Fox’s description of its footage says Trump argued that school choice is "the civil rights issue of our time", and frames the remarks around parental rights and educational freedom. That is the outlet characterising its own clip rather than a transcript, so it establishes the theme of the remarks rather than their exact wording.

What it does not change

School choice is a different question from the ones this site is mainly about. Nothing announced here alters what a North Carolina district must tell you, what materials you may inspect, or what happens when you object to something in a classroom.

  • Notification and opt-out rights come from N.C.G.S. § 115C-76.45 and the surrounding sections.
  • The right to inspect instructional materials comes from § 115C-76.35(b)(3).
  • The complaint process, with its deadlines, is § 115C-76.60.

Those apply to your child’s school today. A federal tax credit beginning in 2027 does not.

The question we cannot yet answer

Whether North Carolina participates, and what a family here would actually need to do to benefit, is not addressed in the coverage. We would rather say that than guess. When we can cite the enacting legislation and the state’s position, we will write this properly.
